Sperm wash helps couples in the Frisco area conceive

"Sperm wash" is something of a misnomer. At
NTMIC Sperm Lab it is more accurately described as "sperm processing." This sterile, scientific method of separating sperm from semen obtains the highest possible concentration of healthy sperm for intrauterine insemination.
The primary steps of the sperm washing process are:
- Density gradient centrifugation – The semen sample is layered on top of a dense fluid, and the test tube is spun in a centrifuge. The most normally-shaped (thus most aerodynamic) and fastest sperm reach the bottom of the tube faster than slow sperm and other components of the sample.
- Siphoning – The first step develops an enriched population of the best quality sperm at the bottom of the test tube. Now, this lower fluid is siphoned off, and spun again to further concentrate viable sperm.
- Buffering – Sperm are placed into a special buffering liquid that simulates the fluid inside a woman’s fallopian tubes, where egg fertilization normally occurs.
- Conception – The washed sample is utilized at the precise time indicated by the OBGYN, to put the greatest number of highly-functional sperm in close proximity to the egg, at just the right moment.
Morphology assessment makes a big difference
If sperm has a good morphology score, it will successfully penetrate the egg on its own. Most sperm labs do not assess morphology on a sample to be used for insemination. NTMIC Sperm Lab does a morphology assessment before and after the sperm wash. If morphology improves from the sperm wash, the
fertility rate also improves.
Sperm wash is most appropriate for men with low sperm count or low movement (or both), but whose sperm have adequate morphology. Don’t worry, we sort all of that out with an initial
semen analysis.
Dr. Buch and his team simply believe that couples deserve this additional information in their efforts to conceive.
