Sperm analysis requires a sample of semen, which is the fluid that is ejaculated by a man during a sexual orgasm. The sample is received either on-site in one of our private rooms or at-home, depending on the preferences of the patient. The sample is then brought to our laboratory and run through a series of tests to get a proper diagnosis as to whether the male partner has an infertility concern. There are several aspects of the semen that are evaluated during this time, and they include:

  • Sperm count (concentration)
  • Sperm motility
  • Sperm morphology
  • Semen volume
  • Total motile count
  • Color and viscosity evaluation
  • Semen pH
  • Fructose levels
  • White blood cells

If it is determined that there is a concern with fertility, couples may be advised to consider sperm washing along with intrauterine insemination. This requires assistance by several doctors, including an evaluation of the female partner to determine if there are any infertility concerns on her side. Couples can work together with their doctors to determine the best treatments to improve the chances of fertility, or to ask about moving forward with IUI solutions. In this case, the sperm washing procedure available with Dr. Jeffrey Buch and his team at NTMIC Sperm Lab may be a great step forward in preparing for this method of conception. We encourage patients to ask questions about how the process works.

What is sperm washing?

sperm testingThe sperm washing procedure is a special treatment on semen samples that help improve the chances of successful implantation via intrauterine insemination (IUI). Sperm washing provides amazing results when it comes to concentrating the highest quality sperm in a sample. During the process, sperm with poor motility and abnormal morphology are removed, as well as any dead sperm that may be present in the sample. Seminal fluid, prostaglandins, and white blood cells are also separated out from the sample to reduce the chances of them interfering with the viable sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg. Only the healthiest, strongest, and most mobile sperm are used in the sample that is inserted into the uterus of the female partner.

Intrauterine insemination is not always successful, but sperm washing can greatly increase the chances of conception with this method. If there are treatments to improve the quality of the sperm, men may be encouraged to follow these recommendations prior to providing a semen sample for sperm washing. Sperm analysis over time allows the doctor to monitor the process of improving sperm and determining when the time is right to take a sample and prepare it for intrauterine insemination for better chances of successfully conceiving a child.
